We ended last season by an exciting tour of the Wing House. Our tour guide was David Hertz, the noted architect, who designed the Wing House. David and his wife, Laura own the adjacent 100 acres which is aptly named XANABU. It is an idyllic place of great beauty and contentment. Back in the early days of Hollywood it was owned by Tony Duquette, a world, renowned set designer and American artist. Some of the sets he designed for The King and I in 1956 are still there along with other priceless relics.
Explore the Coffee Plantation, featuring coffee plants adapted for California’s coast and bordered by passion fruit vines for natural wind protection. Native plantings form a living “fire wall,” alongside oaks that showcase pruning and fuel-load clearing for fire safety. The grounds also include two fruit orchards and distinctive architectural structures, blending beauty, sustainability, and inspiration.
This tour is only for paid club members of the new season. The dues are $40 per person or $60 for a family membership. You can pay your dues by credit card or Pay Pal. No guests allowed because limited space.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes for the garden tour. Carpooling is a must because of limited parking on site. For privacy reasons, we will not disclose the address at this point in time.
Please RSVP by October 10th.
Look forward to seeing you at this special event.
Post Event Summary
The Malibu Garden Club was given a fantastic tour of XANABU on Thursday by its owner, David Hertz, renowned architect. He has transformed 100 acres into a magical Shangri-La Garden with lots of new succulents, trees, and coffee bushes.
As shown below, it’s a combination of Bali Hai in the South Pacific and the King and I. It’s former owner, Tony Duquette, was set director for MGM Studios and he brought his sets to his home.
Hope you all are enjoying our beautiful weather. We will be announcing our next event soon.
Glen and Terry Gessford
Co presidents,
